How to find your purpose in life

“At your birth a seed is planted. That seed is your uniqueness. It wants to grow, transform itself, and flower to its full potential. Your Life’s Task is to bring that seed to flower, to express your uniqueness through your work. The stronger you feel and maintain it—as a force, a voice, or in whatever form—the greater your chance for fulfilling this Life’s Task and achieving mastery.” Robert Greene in Mastery

We spend most of our time working to make a living. For most of us its like two separate lives- one at work and another where we actually live. These people live for weekends, to spend the money they earned hard with their sweat. But work is the part of life that we can’t escape unless you became a monk. So the question arises : how to find the work you love, that you’d do even if you don’t get paid, which devours you into the flow of time. Having read hundreds of self help books , i’ve shortlisted these simple step that will help you find your purpose in life-

  • 1-Dig deep into your childhood- You will find satisfaction in jobs that have strings attached to your childhood. If you liked making castles at the beach ,then thats one thing you know you love doing, ofcourse you can’t get a job making sand castles but you can go for 3d animation. If you liked doing make-up then you can become a make-up artist. You get the picture; the things you loved doing in childhood won’t be the exact job you are getting but you will know the field you should pursue.

“We all have big ambitions for the future but those dreams only become reality if we do something towards them regularly. To achieve audacious goals, we need to take action and make small changes every day. We need to think big and act small.” Dr Grace Lordan In Think Big

2-Don’t stuck in one job- Do different jobs and gain experience in various fields . I see so many people pursuing masters degree’s without knowing where they are going to work, how their day to day work life is going to look like. On the other hand, some people find their path in their early 20s. The only way to achieve this is to try different jobs, which will help you see the world differently, know youself better and help you discover your strengths.

“The happiest people are not the ones who achieve the most. They are the ones who spend more time than others in a state of flow.” García & Miralles in Ikigai

3-Avoid money traps- Don’t chase the highest paying job in your 20s. Your 20s aren’t your best years for making money, it’s your 30s and 40s. Your 20s are for gaining experience . I fell into this trap but its never too late to start over. In your 20s ,you have less responsibilities so you can take risks. So take risks, get apprenticeships, study, travel, find mentors, start a YouTube channel, join clubs, and invest you time in experiences that will pay dividends in the coming decades.

“A false path in life is generally something we are attracted to for the wrong reasons-money, fame, attention, and so on. If it is attention we need, we often experience a kind of emptiness inside that we are hoping to fill with the false love of public approval.” Robert Greene in mastery

4-Overcome Boredom- In this fast paced world, people think they can learn anything quickly ,but experts know it will take years to master skills. When you learn a new skill, after the excitement phase ends ,you may get tedious and bored with repetition. This is the single thing that stops people from learning new skills and most people quit. Get out of the urge to withdraw and learn the small repeated skills to gain mastery. Only after coping with boredom will you find flow in your tasks.

If you are thinking about your purpose, if it doesn’t let you sleep ,then you are ahead of 90% of the population. Reading this article is the part of finding your purpose. Deep thinking and talking small actions will lead to freedom, from working for money to working for yourself.
